We’ve entered the Fall season but no complaints here! It’s still warm during the days but soon enough the colder temperatures will set in. We all love that summer glow and are desperately trying to hang on to it. I had a chance to chat with Victoria Radford, makeup artist to stars like Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas, runway models, and the everyday woman like you and me! Victoria has a background in holistic medicine and celebrity styling. She’s got the inside scoop for women on how to address our daily skin issues on and off the camera. I know she has some great tips and tricks up her sleeve on how to achieve and maintain a healthy look!
We’re transitioning now from summer to fall. How do we maintain that healthy summer glow a little longer?
Have you ever heard of dry brushing? It’s an ancient, holistic method used to exfoliate the skin and increase circulation. It keeps your skin looking bright and helps to detoxify and stimulate the lymphatic system. Dry brushing removes dead skin cells, which helps products applied to the skin after dry brushing become more effective. You can buy a dry brush at any health food store.
What is one thing that women should always be doing in their skin care regime?
When it comes to taking care of your skin, choose products that are loving and comforting. In the shower, I like to use products that are soap and fragrance-free such as Polysporin’s Eczema Essentials Daily Body Wash, which promotes good skin health even when I don’t have dry skin. Following up with a hydrating moisturizer is also very important, such as the Eczema Essentials Daily Moisturizing Cream. It is much easier to prevent dry skin than it is to correct it by ensuring you have a daily moisturizing routine.
What about late nights that lead to dull faces in the morning. Any tips or tricks to wake up our skin?
One of my favourite tricks in the winter is to use a face self-tanner under my makeup every three days or so. This helps to brighten my skin and gives me a sun kissed glow throughout the cold harsh months.
As we get older our skin doesn’t seem to repair as quickly, why is that?
Young skin turns over from old to new in only 28 days. After turning 20(ish), 28 days turns into 30 days and it takes longer for your skin to regenerate itself. That’s one of the reasons why a good, balanced skin routine will help keep your skin looking fresh and young.
Scarring from adult acne is a real thing. So, what can we do about that?
Any kind of scarring and discolouration is helped exponentially with good exfoliation. My favourite kinds of exfoliates have enzymes in them so it is less mechanical (please no harsh scrubs ever). Enzymes gently eat away at the top layer of skin instead of the mechanical exfoliates, which strip and nick your skin.
What about colours? Are there any trends we should be aware of this fall?
This year’s pantone colour of the year is “Wild Orchid” and it’s perfect for taking your makeup into fall. You can wear it as a nude berry all the way into the deep dark Bordeaux lips. Just go with something that feels right for you.
You’ve worked with many celebrities and socialites, tell me they are just like us?
In my job, I get to work with a lot of different types of people and personalities. I find that the most interesting people that I’ve had the privilege of coming across are those that are very true to themselves and they all differentiate greatly from one another. The word “normal” does not apply to these extraordinary individuals.
Who’s the most adventurous when it comes to playing with looks?
Me? I think because it’s my job to try all of the different trends in all different ways. I usually end up being more adventurous than most of my clients.
Any funny or amazing experiences to share when working with celebrities?
I am contractually not allowed to share any funny or amazing experiences, but I promise you there are many!
Darn! Anything surprised you about them?
I had the privilege to work with Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas. I toured for a few years and was surprised at how inspirational their work, drive and dedication rubbed off on me, and forced me to start thinking outside the box for my own career and passion.
Your favourite lipstick now?
I just created a new lipstick for fall that stays on all night long called “Just Bitten” and you can see it showcased on my Instagram account: @victoriaradford
