These seven gluten-free snack ideas are great for you and your kids! Perfect for school lunches or an after school snack, these recipes will keep your kids happy, healthy and smiling!
Rice cakes, nutella and fruit
If your child isn’t allergic to hazelnuts, this easy snack is sweet and healthy. Spread Nutella on a gluten-free rice cake and top with fresh fruit. Peaches and pears taste great, but apples are a classic fall favourite as well. This snack is great because it’s inexpensive and can be found in a regular grocery store. It also tastes like a dessert, and the crunchy rice cake is very satisfying. For an even healthier version, swap out the Nutella for organic peanut butter or another nut spread.
No-bake chocolate macaroons
My mom used to make these sweet chocolate coconut balls for me as a kid, and now that I’ve been gluten-free for a few years she’s been making them a lot more. I love that you don’t need to bake them and kids can have fun rolling the coconut into balls. Here’s a recipe for chocolate macaroons that are also free of refined sugar.
Applesauce
This classic kids’ snack is perfect for school or as a healthy dessert. Gluten-free applesauce (look for ones that are unsweetened and add a bit of honey or agave syrup for a healthier sweetener) has been popping up more in the mainstream grocery aisles, or you can follow this easy recipe and make it in a crockpot.
Rice Krispies sushi
Here’s a fun dessert snack that’s great for parties or special occasions (or an exotic alternative to a birthday cake). Make a “roll” out of gluten-free Rice Krispies and marshmallows with licorice or gummy bears in the center, and cut the roll into small sushi-sized pieces. Have your child help you decorate the pieces with candy fish and Fruit Roll Ups for sweet seaweed.
Hummus and veggies
For school, pack bite-size pieces of carrots, peppers, celery and cucumbers along with some hummus for dipping. This snack is also nut-free so it’s safe to bring to school, and the hearty chickpeas are high in protein to keep your kid energized throughout the school day.
Ice cream sandwiches
This cool treat is trendy and a kid favourite. You can make gluten-free ice cream sandwiches by scooping a bit of (gluten-free) ice cream and sandwiching it between two gluten-free chocolate chip cookies. For a more home made approach, you can do the same thing with thin gluten-free Rice Krispies squares.
Gluten-free protein bars
This snack idea is great for road trips or school. You can make a few extra bars to keep them on hand as a healthier alternative to store bought options. You can swap out cranberries for other dried fruit like pineapples and mangoes too.
