To quote one of my all-time favourite fictional heroines, Anne of Green Gables, I’m in the "depths of despair." I’ve got the flu, it’s now been 6 days, and all I can think about is Nyquil and Neocitran, both of which I cannot take because I’m pregnant. I can’t breathe. I’m up the whole night coughing and glaring at my husband and his oh-so-easy peaceful slumber. Not only is my body huge and unrecognizable, but now it’s not even doing what it’s supposed to – getting better. My immune system is not responding, and I’m feeling quite hopeless.
Of course, as timing would have it, my husband’s work has exploded and he not only worked late every night this past week, but most of the day today (it’s Saturday). My kids, being kids, sense my vulnerability and are taking full advantage…I’m sad. I need drugs. I’ll write a more interesting blog in a few days when things are hopefully better.

Oh, I’m sorry you feel so crummy. I hope that you’re feeling better very, very soon.

My doctor told me to take a hot shower before going to bed. It unplugs the sinuses.
I hope you feel better soon.

Here’s another tip for getting a little sleep at night…I’ve heard lately that a teaspoon of honey or a little dark chocolate are both more effective than cough medicine before bedtime. (and if they don’t work, at least you get something sweet!)

Amreen, I am so sorry you’re not feeling well, but delighted you quoted my favourite heroine for troubled times. Have you tried a humidifier with eucalyptus oil in it? That helps clear the passages while you sleep. I think if you call Motherisk at Sick Kids, there are also a couple of cough medicines you can take so you don’t have to suffer through. There comes a point where the doctor decides that mom’s need for sleep over rules baby and medicine.

Amreen, I received an e-mail a week or so ago & it said before you go to bed if you slather you’re feet up with Vicks Vaporub & then put a pair of socks on it’s supposed to help with the cough. It is probably just a crazy home remedy, but when you can’t take anything to help the symptoms I’d be willing to try some pretty crazy stuff. Now if only slathering the kids in Vicks would soothe them too!!
Get better soon.
