Bathing suit season is well and truly upon us. Those last minute squats, crunches and kale salads have done all they possibly can and now it is all up to the swim suit itself. But really, is there a single woman in the history of the world that enjoys getting into those tiny, poorly-lit closets that we call fitting rooms and squeezing themselves into ity-bity pieces of lycra? I highly doubt it.
I recently had the opportunity to chat to celebrity stylist Alexis Honce who has partnered up with Kellogg’s Special K to help us through the dreaded bathing suit shopping season. I figured she would know a thing or two about looking good, so I was excited to get her tips for how to find the perfect poolside and cottage looks for this summer!
I mean, if Alexis’s tips are good enough for the likes of Michelle Williams, Shenae Grimes and Ryan Gosling, they are definitely good enough for us right?!
Why are some of us stressed when it comes to buying a bathing suit?
I think we are all stressed out because you really can’t hide behind a swimsuit. You won’t be too covered up and we all have body issues that we deal with and the thought of wearing a swimsuit brings out those insecurities. However, it can be less stressful if you know your body and find a suit that compliments your shape. It’s all about playing with color and style to balance your frame. There is a perfect suit for everyone.
When it comes to bathing suit shopping, please tell us that celebrities have a few of their own insecurities in the fitting room?
Celebrities are not immune to body image issues. Everyone I have worked with young or old, celebrity or not has body image issues they have to confront. Celebrities in particular are conscious of their shape because they get photographed often and are constantly in the public eye. Many of them have the privilege of personal trainers and fashion stylist like myself helping with their wardrobe. My advice is to create a balance with a healthy lifestyle. Working out and eating healthy will help you slim down and improve your shape. In addition learn to shop for clothes that work with your body type make you feel good about your looks.
For the fashionable, yet modest woman, what are some of the colour/trends we can incorporate this season when looking for a bathing suit?
The biggest trend this season is the one piece suit. It is making a comeback in new modern cuts and in great bold colours. A one piece is very flattering but I would stay away from neons as they look dated and opt instead for deep Jewel tones when picking your favourite swimsuit. Jewel tones compliment mature skin to keep you looking your best.
What type of material is the most flattering and what should we avoid when buying a new swim suit?
I recommend a swimsuit with lycra as this material has a lot of stretch which makes it comfortable for all day at the pool or beach but it also holds its shape and helps smooth your waistline giving you a slimming look. Think of a bathing suit as an investment. The better quality suits may be more expensive but will last longer and will do the job of holding in, slimming and flattering your figure.
Any tips on how to shop for our body shape, while diverting attention from where we least want it?
The goal to buying the perfect swimsuit for your body type is to create a balanced silhouette. You want to highlight your favourite body parts. And camouflage areas you don’t love. This can be done with bright colours and patterns but the best way to divert attention from problem areas is with dark solid colors.
I am never sure if they are only hoping for a sale so I really want to know, can you trust the salesperson at the bikini shop?
I think you can trust the salesperson if it is a shop that sells only swimwear. They work with their bathing-suits every day and help women with many different body types so they have the experience to help you find the right fit. I wouldn’t rely on salespeople if the store is mostly a clothing store as they may not understand the special issues that arise when buying a bathing suit.
Any particular brands you love?
I love Miracle Suit — it has lycra in the suit and helps shape your body and enhance your curves. They come in a multitude of colours and cuts so I know everyone can find one that they love. I always buy these for my clients and for TV segments.
Why are some bathing suits so expensive? Are they worth it?
It’s a good idea to invest in a bathing suit but don’t do it just for a brand name. Look at the material it is made of and how it’s constructed. You want a bathing suit that will not stretch out and will hold its shape all season long… to get this you will have to pay for it. Good bathing suits should last for more than one season.
Any other tips and tricks we should keep in mind when shopping for a new bathing suit?
My main advice is get ready to shop! That means shaving your legs, doing your makeup and hair, and get a pedicure. You want to feel your best before you even step into the change room. Also take a girlfriend you trust for a second opinion. She can keep you on track and also provide some comic relief when needed.
Reality is, we all don’t look like Gisele Bundchen, and that’s okay. So what is the perfect beach “accessory” for every woman?
Confidence! Confidence goes a long way on the beach. Strut yourself and be you! Sexy comes in all shapes.
