I wrote this poem at about 2 a.m. one morning as I was, yet again, the only adult awake in the house dealing with a newborn baby.
One minute I was feeling hard done by and overwhelmingly tired. The next I suddenly had a complete change of perspective and realized that this incredible moment would soon pass me by. Our babies are only this dependant on us for such a short time and instead of complaining I needed to soak it in and protect the memory. This poem was the result of my change of heart and I now have a very precious memory recorded for my little girl to one day read and perhaps help her through a sleepless night one day in the future!
Sleepless Nights
Singular moments in a rush of days
Isolated mid-nights of disturbed sleep
We dance together to whispered melody
Shhhh my sweet, sleep will come
Be still and embrace peace
A twitch, a creak, she stirs again
As her dream place recedes
She finds comfort in my arms
My soothing heartbeat
Sways her lids
And slowly she drifts away
Soon she will grow tall
These baby nights long forgotten
Breathe deep, hold close, capture
these precious moments
to last a lifetime.
