Sometimes you just need a chill weekend and I think this is the first weekend since LJ was born that we actually did just that – chilled. It was a productive weekend, but it felt really relaxing and I loved the time our little fam spent together.
Tonight I came across a blog post on The Baby Whisperer that was titled 15 Things You Should Give Up to be a Happy Parent and number nine was Give Up Your Role as Events Coordinator. Bingo! This weekend was so chill because I gave up planning the crap out of our weekend. I got off the treadmill of parenting and welcomed the downtime. It was amazing and as a result our whole family was happy all weekend long.
I hung out with a girlfriend I hadn’t seen in a long time, took L’il E to a birthday party giving the Hubs some solo time with LJ, got some Fall gardening done while L’il E bounced around outside, planned out our dinners for the week and did some grocery shopping, then made a really easy, but yummy Sunday night dinner. Things just rolled along and it was so liberating to see that L’il E and LJ don’t need us to be playing with them all weekend. They were happy as could be.
It’s funny how in these days of uber parenting you can get so caught up and lost in your children’s lives, but giving them some space and much needed downtime allows them to use their imagination and experience what they want. That’s what makes them happy.
You can check out the rest of the list here, but number nine really hit home for me today. If you’re the master planner, just give it up for one weekend and see what happens. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised and happier and so will your kid(s).
