T minus a few days until the kids head back to school. We’ve picked up new pencils and lunchboxes, but we’ve left the big shop until next week. I tell my kids that I want to give them a chance to take a look get settled and figure out what they need, but really I just can’t handle the stores right now. Too much plaid, too many people. I need to be outside sucking up the last few rays of summertime sunshine.
The one item that I know I’ll be looking for, though, is backpacks and so I’ve done a little online research (from my sunny back deck) on the trends in backpacks and what my kids will be asking for. Here are some of the coolest ones I found.
From Indigo, this Owl backpack is adorable, durable and just the right side. I’d have sent my kids off to kindergarten with this one in a heartbeat. At just $24.95 who’s the wise one? Who? Who?
As a mom with boys, I always found that there was lots of variety for girls (sparkly, neon, hearts or animals), but boys’ backpacks tended towards a choice of black or navy. How fun is this Superman cartoon backpack from Gap? It’s just $39.95 and it’s big enough to hold all his supplies…and a superhero cape!
Nothing’s trendier this Fall than faux fur, and what tween girl wouldn’t love strutting into school with this monogrammed faux snow leopard fur backpack? At $105 from Pottery Barn Teen, it’s not inexpensive, but for a fashionista teen, this backpack will be so fetch!
There are some places that are the go-to for certain shopping items, and for years Lands’ End has been my destination for backpacks. The company’s been around for 50 years, and they’ve earned their reputation for quality and durability quite honestly. This solid Featherlight Medium Backpack can be monogrammed with your child’s name or initials and will easily last him or her for years to come. It’s only $29.99, and watch for Lands’ End’s new Canadian website launching September 16. It promises to make it easier and more transparent for Canadians shopping online (more to come on that!)
No excuses…backpacks for everyone in the family that you can order from the comfort of your own lounge chair.

That little SkipHop one IS cute – but I discovered when my girl was in kinder that sadly, those smaller bags that look just right are too small, because they need to hold a picture book. 🙁 I’ve bought Gap bags with good success, though last year’s broke under the weight of everything my girl never took out of it, so she went back into her older Gap one that still worked just fine!

The place the rhymes with Sinners has always been my huckleberry… but I did buy the Skip Hop lunchbox in a ladybug motif for my little Ladybug for this fall. (She had the zebra one for two years… it was time for a new one.)

All three of my kids have Lands End Backpacks. Cuyler is going into grade 5 and has had the same backpack since SK. Cam also had the same backpack all through middle school.
I only wish they still made the wide mouth ones 🙁
