This Life. That’s the title Jen and I selected for this blog. My first blog, ever. I have been writing for a while. I’ve had a column for 5 years in a seasonal paper and I’ve written a number of beautifully unpublished articles about this and that but I’m always about 3 years behind the latest technology so I’m new to blogging. I’ve never even done a power point presentation. I don’t have a web page, a Facebook account or access to Myspace, but I have children in my home who do so I’m feeling pretty cool this week writing my own blog.
But that coolness quickly subsides when I look at the title again, "This Life" and I think of This Life this week. I’m a part-time high school teacher and this week I teach Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I also tutor Monday night and have dinner plans with two friends I met on maternity leave almost three years ago. This is the first free night we’ve been able to find in that time. Tuesday is dance night and it is either a sad commentary on what it takes to keep kids in programmes or a huge testament to what a supermom/step-mom I am that it’ll be a blog topic all its own one day. But this Tuesday is also Shrove Tuesday, so it’s pancakes for dinner with sticky maple syrup all over the counters and then my turn to host my neighbourhood moms group executive meeting while my husband takes eldest step-daughter, who has declared that her blog name for my purposes should be "Cupcake", to the Toronto Maple Leaf Game that was meant for me but I can’t go because of this life.
Wednesday nights are swimming lessons and the only time slot left in the extremely expensive swimming programme that we were left with becuase I did not dial the city sign up at 6:00 am properly is 7:45pm for our three old. There is something else on that night as well but at the moment I can’t remember what.
Thursday is hockey and squash, and I am running away to a movie with a girl friend. The last movie I saw was Brokeback Mountain so I’m so excited and I’m going to enjoy my excitement because by the time Thursday rolls around one of us will have to cancel. Friday we pack the car and go skiiing for the weekend. And did I mention that it is report card week. That’s why this blog is "This Life." And this week of this life is a bit terrifying from this vantage point but stick with me and we’ll see if I still have it together on Thursday. Oh yes, did I mention that I’m also starting a cleanse? A full-on detox, supplement, what am I a maniac cleanse. So I won’t even have M&M’s to get me through.

Welcome, Elizabeth. I’m a wife of 43 years, mom & grandma in Toronto … and am sure I’m going to LOVE your blog because you’re the only one who seems to be less than 30 years close to my age! So what can you really tell from photographs?! I’m a pro photographer in Toronto, so know all about digital imaging!! Sorry if I’ve aged you!! (I’m 62). In any case … welcome to Urban Moms. If you like it here almost as much as I do, you’ll be fine! And if you keyboard as fast as you think (like I do), this blogging thing will be a piece of cake!! Congrats. Hang in there!!
