Before I even start, I need you all to check out this hot picture of me at my daughter’s seventh (SEVEN! Can you even believe it?) birthday party. I saw the pic and thought, "oh, who is that hot young woman standing near the guests?" and then I realized: IT’S FRIGGIN’ ME! So…check it out…stroke my ego…tell me I’m pretty! (Even if I am slouching!)
Okay, last week sometime I challenged you all to share your "one chance" with the rest of us. You know…what is it you feel deep down you were born to do?
I was originally inspired to think about my one chance by Paul Potts, winner of Britain’s got talent, but you can read all about that in my original post. (Scroll down, though. It’s nearer the bottom, after all the yadayada about my butternut squash soup.)
So now it’s time for me to come clean, I guess, as promised.
I would like to be a writer.
What’s that? Couldn’t see that tiny font? Oh, sorry. Must be my insecurity showing. The truth is, I would like to be a writer. Like, a writer of books, for real, with paper and ISBN numbers and everything. But because I’ve never actually finished writing anything "for real", I am at a bit of a disadvantage in realizing this dream.
Enter the One Chance Challenge.
I’m going to take it on myself, and I urge you to do it to. It’s simple, actually.
1. Write down your goal. Below in comments, if you want to go public. Or on your blog. Or on a whiteboard at the office (well, okay, maybe not, especially if your goal involves something that would lead to you no longer holding your current job). Or even on a tiny scrap of paper that you put under a book in the drawer of your bedside table (or nightstand, if you’re Ali).
2. Don’t pass up on your One Chance! Paul Potts famously decided whether or not to audition for Britain’s Got Talent on the outcome of a coin toss, but he got lucky! Don’t leave your future to chance. If you see something that looks like an opportunity…it is. And there’s nothing worse than a missed opportunity, including failure. So go for it! Carpe Diem! (Have I ever told you how much I hate people who say carpe diem? I mean, Dead Poets’ Society was a great movie and all, but really, can we make this go away now?)
3. Tell at least one other person. This way you’ll have someone to hold you accountable. Trust me, it won’t hurt. Look I just told all of you internetsters that my secret dream is to be a writer. I mean HELLO? How cliche is that?
4. Look for inspiration everywhere. I found my inspiration on TV this weekend. Yes, yes, Hubster and I were indulging in our little habit of watching weight loss reality TV, in this case our all time fave, X-Weighted. This week’s episode was a little different, featuring a married couple (parents to 3 little girls) who were losing weight together. Hubs and I have seen each and every episode of this show, and we are sure this couple was the greatest success story so far. Both of them lost over 60 pounds in six months: an amazing accomplishment by any standard. AND: they weathered some rough spots in their marriage in the process, coming out stronger on the other side.
GOAL #2: I’d also, incidentally, like to finally achieve my goal weight (155).
I’m considerably further along on this path since I re-joined Weight
Watchers. In fact, last week I was down 3.8 pounds! Yay me!
So? Who’s with me?
Oh, and guess what? I started a new blog, all of my very own. It’s called This Is Kat and it’s just more about me and my crazy ideas and opinions. Come say hi!

You really are inspiring. I’ve been reading for less than 1 year now & am always thinking about rejoining WW. I was a member 6 years ago, lost 25 lbs…2 kids later…regained 15 of those lbs, yada yada yada. I am definitely going to rejoin this Monday with my sister & am looking forward to it! Thanks!!! Have a great weekend.

Lori, I’d love to write fiction – I keep thinking for kids but when I write it comes out adult, LOL. Perhaps I need to take a course in creative writing!

So, now that you’ve outed yourself… what kind of writer? Fiction/non-fiction, adult/children?
I’d love to be a “real” writer too (beyond my thesis…ugh!) Non-fiction and childrens, for the record. 🙂
