well, i’m officially 8.5 pounds away from my goal weight. realistically, i’m aiming to lose 5.5 pounds. i’m determined to lose this weight, because the majority of my clothing doesn’t close, and the few things that do close make me look like a stuffed sausage. hot, i know.
but, while watching In Her Shoes –
which was quite possibly one of the worst movies i’ve seen in a long time. (second only to Derailed. i know, i know, everyone loved this movie. the husband predicted the ending about 17 minutes into the movie, and i thought there was negative chemisty between Sir Clive and Jennifer Aniston…but i am now getting entirely off topic, a habit you may have to get used to. i’m of the wandering mind types.)
– i got inspired. In the movie, Rose, the less attractive sister, has a gigantic, amazing shoe collection. because shoes look good on everyone. fat, skinny, tall, short, narrow, wide. they look good. and shoes make you feel good. so, this morning, instead of talking about the skirt i’m wearing that’s hugging me in places i didn’t need any hugging thank you very much, we’re going to talk about shoes.
how many pairs of shoes do you have? 10? 20? 50? 100? too many to count? my sister buys a ton of shoes. so many that her husband goes into her closet, grabs about 50 pairs and gets rid of them, and she doesn’t even notice that 50 pairs have gone missing. now that’s a lot of shoes.
i’d say i have about 50 pairs of shoes. but i wear about 20. maybe 25. i love shoes. but i have a problem. i always buy either the wrong shoes (like, let’s say, a pair of shoes that i love in the store and look amazing, and then i bring them home and have nothing to wear them with) or i buy the same shoes over and over and over again (black. heels.)
i bought my favorite pair of shoes at Opry Mills in Nashville. I love them. and i loved them. to the point where they are falling apart.
i love these babies. they have the perfect hell height. the perfect little detail. and we are not even going to get into how freakin’ comfortable they are. like walking on clouds. seriously.
so, i knew that replacing them was not going to be an easy task.
so i bought these:
and these:
and these:
and i love all three. but they are not going to be sufficient replacements. and i’m taking suggestions. please. help.
my second favorite pair of shoes are these. no question.
and then there are the $40 Pumas i picked up at the puma outlet in Atlanta:
and here we have a classic what-was-i-thinking buy. seriously, what was i thinking? the saleslady talked me into these. i have yet to wear them. i’m a short girl. think Britney Spears short. i need heels. need them. i also really need some help. what do you wear these with that won’t make me look stumpy?
and then there are the shoes that i will never wear again but can’t bear to throw out. like these. that i wore. 8 years ago. to my wedding.
now this, folks, brings me to another dilemma, one that i have EVERY.SINGLE.YEAR around this time. i’ve got the business look down. no problem. heels are easy. simple. i don’t have to think about it. and once the weather gets cooler, boots will suffice. for work.
but for casual? i’m so screwed.
in the summer, it’s easy. sandals or flip flops, depending on the situation. in jeans, i don’t really have issues, because i wear heels in my longer jeans, and flats in my shorter jeans, and they all look good. everything looks good with jeans. that’s the beauty of jeans. it’s the casual skirt-y attire where i’m lost.
let’s say i’m wearing a jean skirt and a sweater. shoes? what sort of shoes am i supposed to wear? i can’t wear sandals or flip flops anymore. and i can’t bring out the boots yet. it’s too warm, still. so, is there something in between? anyone? anyone? Bueller? please help.

I NEED YOUR KEEN SENSE OF STYLE! If only I was in Canada, I’d beg you to help me shop. Did you see my Canadian Wordless Wednesday post?

I too am not a shoe shopper: i buy out of neccessity. I love bare feet (or socks if I am chilled). My mother in law used to freak (silently but I could feel the tension) because when my kids were little I never put them in ‘walking shoes” – they were either bare foot or slippers with treds (they had enough bruises from everyday mishaps without wiping out in slippery socks)
Maybe I never had the income to make shopping a hobby but I just get stressed when I am shopping.
I love the stories/comments those – you are all so genuine and expressive – I LOVE it !

Okay, I also love shoes and am seriously considering offering you money for some of yours – love them! And Kath I am so glad you said that about the Crocs as I was feeling I was the only human left on the planet who associates them with the operating room as everyone acts so suprised when I say it. Okay over 10 years as a nurse only seeing really old male surgeons wearing them might have slightly warped my view but I just don’t think I can ever see them in any other light. Any other shoe – bring it on!

I just don’t get the shoe thing. Sorry. I have brown sandals, black sandals; brown clogs, black clogs; black boots, black “dress shoes” that are the bad basic flats no one else has worn in at least 6 years. And pink crocs knock-offs that were given to me by my 3-year-old for my birthday. They’re actually quite fun, and way too silly for my style, which makes them even more fun.
The black clogs dh made me buy when I was pregnant with BEN (yes, they’re 6 years old), when we went to the mall and I squealed out of nowhere because my 100-year-old cheap shoes were killing my preggo feet. He made me spend money on the shoes that were in style at the time that I did not like. Today, I love ’em. And I’m not a shoe person. And they’re six years old.
In college in Arizona I wore cheap huarachis (sp?) until enough straps boinged off such that they would not stay on my feet. At that point the hot pavement had burned the bottoms of my feet from the HOLES in the SOLES. I’d rather go barefoot, but I’m not the granola type and people would then know how truly weird and different I really am. I’m not there yet.

Love shoes!!!!!!!! Love them!!!!!!!
Today I bought two pairs, gold BCBG girls ballerina flats and Nike shock runners cause i’m planning to walk away the 10lbs i gained over the summer.
As for your dilemna, I would do a wedge either in a Mary Jane or pump style.

i wish i could wear what i want and just go with it…but i’m way too self conscious for that!

Speaking of boots- I wore black boots today for the first time this season! So maybe your dilemma is over – boot season has actually begun! Although don’t take my work for it – cuz my new motto is – “wear what I want, when I want”…and I have to say – I feel so much more carefree and relaxed now that I live like that! No rules, no one telling you what you can and can’t wear – try it and tell me if it works for you π

I’m right there with you on the Crocs, Kath. However, you need some SHOE SHOPPING therapy! As you are still on your weight loss journey (35lbs…hurray!) you are not going to invest in a wardrobe…yet. But shoes – go get ’em!

help.
Further to repeated and ruthless pestering from my husband I am down to fewer than 10 (yes TEN!) pairs of shoes *sob*! And three of those are from my office-job days, so 1. they’re out of date and 2. I have nothing to wear them with, nor any reason to. One I paid $350 for at Arnold Churgin (big, trendy shoe place in Calgary – no, really!) Somehow it seemed wise at the time to drop two days’ earnings on a pair of 3-inch platform sandals with a single 1/4-inch strap across the top of the foot. Ahhh…the good ol’ days. These days it’s all about the birkenstocks for me. Was tempted by crocs, but 1. I don’t garden enough and 2. I spend no time in an operating room and 3. those are the only acceptable settings for an adult woman to wear crocs. JMHO. Can you believe it, I used to be size 8.5, slowly but surely stretched to a 9.5, flippered my way into a 10 during pregnancies and now after losing nearly 35 lbs my shoe size has also gone down? I’m back to a svelte 8.5 – but how gross is the thought that I must have had foot fat? Ewwwwww….

hey! sorry it’s taken me so long to comment. congrats on the new blog!
i am right there with you on the shoe with a casual skirt thing. i just stay away from it altogether and just wear jeans. if i have to wear a skirt i’ll stay away from the jean skirt. see? problem solved.
no? i would ask aimee and do whatever she told me to.

oooh…i’d love to go shopping…if i knew who you were! π

Ohhh! Pick me! Pick me! I love this stuff. I see you like girly shoes and as for heels – there are lots of dress ’em up, dress ’em down wedges out there – some with straps – great with casual skirts esp. demin and bare legs. Once the weather cools off you can wear them with tights. Try Aldo and Feet First – comfy and you won’t pay a fortune. Also check out end of season sales for heeled espadrilles (woven, wedge heels with ankle straps or ties) – Shoe Company might be a good source. Hope that helps.
Hey – do you want to go shopping some time?

Katie – be proud of your height! I am 5’11” and wore 2″ heels to a wedding on the weekend. I towered over most of the men except my husband who is 6’4″…nothing like long legs in high heels. Work it sista!

I love shoes, it’s clothing I have a problem with. No good clothing = shoes don’t look right.
I like the steve madden shoes you have there. The black ones with the pink flowers are also nice.
I haven’t thrown away my wedding shoes either!
haley-o says
I’m not talking to you. Shoes do NOT look good on me! π I have small feet, but wide feet. And, they’re flat. So, heels are super uncomfortable….I’m as short as you are, as you know. You tower over me in your high-heeled shoes. Biatch! π So, I’m not talking to you about shoes! π
Katie says
i have those steve madden ones! but i’m on the tall side (5’8″-ish) so they make me self-consciously tall. which leads to my bad shoe habit – i love to buy beatiful, glamorous, glorious high heels…but i rarely wear them because i hate feeling so tall. but i can’t stop buying them. if i see a gorgeous pair of heels on sale, i’ll buy them, then stick them in my shoe-rack almost as if they are display items, and wear them maybe once. it’s an issue.
so what i’m saying is, don’t feel bad. we all have shoe issues. π
p.s. these shoes from target are cute AND comfy

The majority of my shoes are casual shoes and most of them are sneakers. I have a bit of a sneaker obsession. I’m really not one to dress up, so I don’t have a lot of dressy shoes like the cute ones you posted. I’m a bit of a shoe bum, I guess. π
The most I ever spent on a pair of shoes was…um, I think $130 for a pair of really cool Airwalks. I still have them. Oh, and my Birkenstocks were a lot too, but they lasted me for like, fifteen years. Not kidding.

I’ve been thinking about shoes a lot lately – because I won my splurge club money and that’s what I think I will buy. I love shoes, too. Heels – love heels. And I’m tall… and my husband is short… but I’m still all about heels.
I hear you on the cooler-weather-shoe-dilemna – can’t wait to hear (read) some suggestions…
Jen says
Ali – gorgeous shoes, btw! Being at the other end of the height spectrum I actually really like the flatter ones…too bad they wouldn’t fit my size 9.5 feet!
As for what footwear works in transitional times I am right there with you. I tend to avoid these outfits for this reason…I go either very casual or very dressy…saves me having to figure it out!
