I am a master at the art of time-suckage.
(movie? anyone?)
i have responsibilities at work. lots of them. lots and lots of them. i read books. and review them. and send them out for review. and read more books. and pay people. and do photo research. and download hi-res photos. and search for specific hard-to-find things. i’ve sort of become well-known around here as the girl who knows how to find things. back issues of strange magazines that went out of print 20 years ago. a photo of a mailbox that says "no junk mail, please" (you think that’s easy to find…but it’s not). african myths. the contact info for Venetia Burney (who, you ask? well, she’s the girl who named Pluto. poor, poor demoted Pluto). you need it and can’t find it? i’m your woman.
because i spend so much of my time researching random things on the internet, i’ve discovered wonderful new ways to suck time. websites that i just.can’t.stop.surfing. like these:
1. Ebay – i would say that ebay sucks a good 80% of my time. i’m slightly obsessed. just this week i picked up an ipod shuffle for just $25, some peek-a-poohs for my princess’s birthday, and an original super mario bros. game for my game boy advance. obsessed, i tell you.
2. Create Your Own South Park Character – oh, the joy this site brings me. i can’t even tell you. if you don’t believe me, try one. send it to me. i’ll even post it!
3. The Phrase Finder – the geek in me loves this site.
4. X-Entertainment 1980’s Commercials – ah, the memories this brings back. ah, they just don’t make ’em like they used to. Remember the California Raisins? the Stride Rite ‘Zipz’ shoes? and Cricket the talking doll? (can we say, creep-y?!)
5. Overheard in the Office – it truly is THE voice of the cubicle. if you work in an office, check this one out. hell, even if you don’t, it’s funny. i mean, i don’t live in New York, but found Overheard in New York to be hilarious.
6. PostSecret – this site is nothing if not brilliant. anonymous confessions sent in on decorated postcards. love it. i have the book. it sits prominently on my coffee table. (it’s actually the ONLY thing on my coffee table…unless you count legos and barbies)
7. Zappos.com – it’s a site. full of shoes. need i say more?
8. WebSuDoku – highly addictive game. equally addictive website.
9. YouTube – i am youtube’s bitch. seriously.
10. Torrentspy – free music. this is where i download all my movies and music. i highly recommend.
what about you? where do you spend your internet time?? i left out the obvious, like imdb and amazon and bloglines and defamer and perezhilton and, of course, urbanmoms.ca and the 200 blogs i read on a daily basis. jesus, i really am a master at the art of time suckage!!!

Hellloooo, nice (I think?) to see I am not alone – of late, I have been ebaying (buying and selling), YouTubing (I think I am the last person in civilisation to discover it!!), Googling (all about Tobs’ PID), Wikipaedia (love, LOVE it), reading newspapers, blogs, etc.
I hate selling on ebay – I hate all aspects of it, except checking on the bidding!

Ha! I was going to post that video. Good thing I didn’t! 🙂 Great post, Al! I’ll have to check these sites out. I used to be the go-to girl for photos, too. When I was sick-as-hell in my first trimester, Molly asked me to look for pics of FLEAS, WEEVILS, LICE, VACCINE NEEDLES, EWWWWWWW! Fleas are sooo gross up close. I was throwing up in my mouth the whole time….

Kath – you’ve got me cracking up.
what a brilliant idea…a new screen name to go in and check up on the bids…i’ve actually sold a few things. my old camera. a coach purse. it was great. now i’m constantly looking around my house trying to find things to sell!
i’m really very twisted.

Ohhh, the glories of eBay! If you think you waste time searching and buying, don’t try selling! I sell in fits and spurts, because it literally sucks more time than there really is in a day. First, you take photos of your items. Then you write the listings. That’s the easy part. Then, you log back in every 5 minutes to see how the bidding’s going. Maybe you re-sign-up under a different email addy and cyber-stalk your own listings on eBay (just don’t bid on them to artificially inflate the price…that’s veryverybad). As for other time-suckers? Just give me google and a question and I’ll be lost in a timeless vortex. Oh! Oh! And Wikipedia!!! Anyone wanna know anything about 2nd Dynasty Egyptian Pharaohs? Cuz I stayed up until 2am reading all there is to know on that subject. Or the etymological origins of the English Language. BBC has a cool page on that one, where you can hear Anglo-Saxon poetry recited. Don’t ask me how they know how to pronounce it, but it still sounds cool…I could go on, but I think I’ll go google the roman empire, or something. It’s not tomorrow yet..

Is that K-Fed FOR REAL?! So hilarious! Maybe he has a sense of humour if nothing else!
