Spring in books is wonderful. the weather starts to get warm. the sun shines. the birds chirp. it’s green everywhere. parks are up and running in full swing. kids are back outside on bikes and playing sports. flowers start to bloom.
but this is not real spring. at least not real spring in Toronto.
Spring in Toronto sucks. it’s cold in the morning, like winter-y cold, and it warms up during the day. but it’s not WARM in any sense of the word. it’s too cold for sandals, and too warm for boots. it is green nowhere. the snow begins to melt to show dirty, brown grass underneath it. the parks are flooded with all the melting snow. the flowers bloom on the first warm day and then wilt shortly after.
my biggest issue with Spring is the spring jacket. i don’t have one. i have never had one. i have about 100 winter coats. wool pea coats, down-filled short jacket. down-filled puffer long jacket. i think in my mind i believe that this in-between-y time is going to last such a short time that it’s hardly worth buying a new jacket. but…i’m a fool. because in Toronto, realistically, this weather lasts until mid june, when it finally gets warm enough to not wear a jacket. that’s still another three months away.
so, the floor’s yours? what sort of jacket do you wear this time of year? trench coat? i feel like trenches are sooo not me – they seem so stiff and constricting. rain coat? completely impractical, don’t you think? what if it’s not raining?
i went to look at jcrew.com…and did not see anything that struck me…well, other than the fact that i wanted to scream out, "honey, i shrunk the jackets!" seriously, they are showing crop jackets for spring. is there anything more silly than that. there is a reason i need a jacket, people. jcrew must be for people who live in warm climates.
i went to look at gap.com…and everything looked very dishevled. like all of the jackets needed ironing.
i went to look at oldnavy.com ..and everything was just meh. it all seems a little Luke from Gimore Girls-y to me. like i need to be wearing flannel underneath or something.
although this was not bad. what thinks you?
help!

song of the day: She’s Not There by the Zombies. because Chris Sligh sang it and it’s been in my head all day.
video of the day: my friend at work sent this to me yesterday and i about died:
Ok, did not watch the video… BUT! I just bought the *cutest* little jacket at Costco of all places. It is not a warm jacket, more of a fashion ‘covering’. But it REALLY is CUTE!! And $20!
I am lacking in all coats. I do have two trench coats similar to the one you have shown, I wear sweaters under them and they work ok, but yes I am so over Canadian winter
ok I can hear the music from the deliverence (you know the banjos) the woman kind of has the look of a a stepford wife (from the original movie).
maybe I can trap them in my yard! is there a difference between black of grey?
I’m wearing a hoodie (zip up — from Old Navy — it fits, and it’s black, so it’s perfect).
Okay, I’m BARFING from that video. I really hope no squirrel was hurt in the filming of that horribly terrible video! EW!!! Vomit!
I like the coat you posted, but I usually resort to the hoodie with a vest throughout spring and winter. Yep, even to work!
Try Jacob’s…especially the one at the Promenade if you’re close. Nice styles and colours. Zara and Costa Blanca also have nice coats too. Very true about Old Navy looking a little too Luke-like. I went into the one at the Promande yesterday and couldn’t figure out what their coats reminded me of until I read your post!
How about Possum melts? Someone get rid of the one that lives under my porch!
I want to heave … seriously. Gotta love the way she say .. squuuuuirl melts, I wanted to wring her neck…
Ah .. the spring jacket debate. Well, considering spring is about 1 month after yours here in montreal, guess I have awhile to shop around as I need one too. So, I will be curious what you fine!! Sorry .. not fashion help here..
It has to be a joke! I checked the website and it was not legit. But…the dead squirrel was DEFINITELY real!!! UGGGERS!!! GAG!!! BLEK!!
mmm… squirrel melts…
it CAN’T be real, right???
That video is so wrong!
Yeah… the dilemna of the spring jacket… always an issue for me. Right now I have a beautiful pink trench in a micro-suede fabric and a cropped, black leather jacket. Those get me pretty far. But I wish I had one that was just a tad warmer… but they just don’t make “spring” coats that are suitable for Canada. There’s an idea for you… in all your spare time… start designing warm spring jackets for Canada.
