This is our fifth Father’s Day. The fifth time that I’m writing to you – saving the letters/posts to show to you one day, should Will choose. I think he will. He’s the most curious kid ever.
So what’s happened this year? He continues to grow at a rate that is mind boggling. I bought him size 12 shoes today. He has legs for miles. The only part of him that’s bigger than his legs is his smile. It remains..man, I don’t even know the words…the greatest part of him.
He’s riding a bike now. This wasn’t easy for him and he was SO proud of himself. He’s playing soccer too but I think his talent lies in baseball, or so his teachers keep telling me. He’s a natural performer but on his terms. If you put him on the spot to do one of his shticks, he’ll revert to an annoying baby voice and a shy smile. Ten minutes later, he’ll do what you asked to an empty room.
We continue to have epic battles as I’m sure we will our whole lives together. He constantly corrects me, which drives me bananas. He’s stubborn as hell. If he thinks he’s right, don’t even bother. It’s not worth the fight. Lately, he’s thrown the most epic tantrums and I feel the terrible twos, that alluded us somewhat, are coming on now…the fu(*ing fives.
He is so curious about the world and geography. I love it. We have a list of places we want to go together and somehow, I will make it happen. He continues to be a phenomenal eater. This kid has eaten things that it took me to my thirties to try. Cheese and hummus remain his big no nos. He’ll tell anyone that listens that he’s allergic to chocolate. His recent loves include fizzy drinks and rice bowls.
His Wiggles/Princess phases are totally over. WAHOO! We are a full on Scooby house – 100%. I love it. I could listen to him make up stories for hours….and he’d do it for hours. Next up, he wants to start filming our own Scooby Doo movies, using his hand as the villain. Look out YouTube, you are about to be barraged.
But what do you really need to know about this kid? Why am I the most proud of him? I’ll tell you. There is rarely a day that goes by where someone doesn’t say how happy he makes them. How he’s made their morning with one of his hugs. How he’s made them laugh with something ridiculous that he’s said. This kid makes so many people happy. And this to me makes everything that’s happened over the past five years so worth it. Because as much pleasure as he brings to others, multiply that by a million and you may get what it’s like to be Will’s mom.
I hope wherever you are today, you took a minute to think about how many people you’ve helped. We took a minute to thank you.

Allergic to chocolate? I have no words.

i’d love to see/hear a reaction from his father. i guess i’ll have to follow your posts around for the next 15 years or so 🙂 your stories make me wonder if HE wonders about his “donations”.
i love the casual pose 🙂
Sara Lanthier says
I wonder about that too Julie – he must. He seems like a thoughtful type.
Susan says
He’s lucky to have you and you are lucky to have him. And let the rest of the world realize how lucky they are that he is in it!

Thanks Susan!
