The Cinefranco International French Film Festival has descended on Toronto and I’ve got my eye on a few titles as mentioned in my round up (link here: Cinefranco Film Festival Top Picks.)
Another one of my picks…
Mince Alors! (Big is Beautiful) is a light-hearted and entertaining film about defining beauty. Nina (Lola Dewaere) works at the same fashion design firm as her very handsome playboy husband Gaspard (Gregory Fitoussi). Being surrounded by models each and every day didn’t really bother Nina until her husband gives her a gift of a getaway to Brides-les-Bains, a well-known weight loss spa in France. Nina, now self-conscious of her ahem…size 10 frame (?) is determined to lose more than the recommended weight as suggested by the spa doctor. At the spa she meets a group of strong and funny characters who all embrace the spa — and for many different reasons! Meanwhile, her husband is having an affair with a younger and thinner co-worker. While she’s at the retreat she reveals that she her dream job is not being an accounting partner at the design firm but an active designer creating attractive swimwear for the average-size woman. No surprise that her husband isn’t impressed with the idea. What Nina realizes is weight is not the issue and self-confidence is really the key to happiness.
I loved this movie and honestly, Lola Dewaere is no frump. She’s stunning and she gets the message across in a very entertaining way…a great feel good movie right to the end!
Move over Bradley Cooper…Gregory Fitoussi is someone you’ll want to keep eye on. As an already established French Actor, Fitoussi has an impressive roster of roles he’s played on television. You can catch him this Sunday night on the mini-series Mr. Selfridge as he plays head visionary Henri Leclair. (Masterpiece Theatre’s UK newest series on PBS)
