The world is waiting for the highly anticipated launch of the new BlackBerry10 mobile operating system at the end of this month. The excitement is mounting but Research In Motion (RIM) has already been trekking with protypes and beta testers getting them into the hands of techies and media alike all leading up to the official launch date of January 30th.
Recently, they made a stop in Toronto to feature the prototype for first impressions. So, without further ado…here’s what you, the end user, may find interesting in this new device and what words you’ll be hearing associated with the new BlackBerry 10…
1. BLACKBERRY BALANCE: For work and personal
I’m sure you know a few people who have two mobile devices. I always found it funny but I get it. I was actually THAT person carrying two devices for a month until I realized that it really was crazy to keep track of both, let alone one. The new BB10 enables you to keep separate profiles and the ability to lock one when using the other. Aside from work, I’m sure some of you allow your kids to play a few games or take photos on your device. Now you don’t have to worry if he/she accidentally gets into your work emails and sends off gibberish to your boss.
2. TIMESHIFT
My device is often my camera in a pinch. I’m constantly taking photos. But here’s the cool thing about the BB10. The eyes are closed in an otherwise fabulous picture? No worries, swing into the TIMESHIFT mode and adjust eyes open. Works on multiple faces in one group shot as well. How it works? When you’re snapping your photo the BB10 captures a couple milli-seconds before and after the actual shutter stops. You simply adjust it to the right moment that you’re happy and save.
3. BLACKBERRY HUB
I’m constantly having to open different windows to access my various messages via email, Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. The HUB offers a messaging centre so you can check everything all in one spot.
4. BLACKBERRY FLOW
Gets rid of the back button. Now instead of closing everything you can swipe down easily and quickly without stopping. It’s more intuitive and with a touch screen keyboard the BB10 also offers “predictive text” instead of auto correct. Less frustration once you get use to it.
5. CALENDAR
More for business, this feature is perfect for someone like me who has the ability of a mouse to retain personal info about people in general. Not only do you use this to store your meeting schedule but you can include WHO will be attending. Upload their profile photo, names, as it pulls information from social media sites like Linkedin and even if they’ve been in the news lately.
In addition, there’s been much talk about apps on the BlackBerry 10 but at the preview, representatives stressed that they are after quality apps not quantity. Having said that, rumours have been swirling already with anywhere between 70,000 to 100,000 apps ready for the January 30th launch date.
BB10 users can also expect the strengthened use of the BBM Voice Function. Much like it’s BBM messaging tool where BlackBerry users can SMS text that runs over the user’s data plan, the BBM Voice is pretty much phone call but through WiFi connection.
We’ll keep an eye on the launch of BlackBerry 10. At the time of the Media Preview no price tag was confirmed nor an official name to the new device. However, the tech world leaks have mentioned that the new device is rumoured to be BlackBerry Z10.
Stay tuned!
