It seems like every week, there is a new story about a new way that some misguided parent decided to “punish” their child for misbehaving.
From public apologies to social media shaming, the typical “No dessert after dinner” and “You’re grounded” just don’t seem to be cutting it anymore.
But one South Carolina couple has gone above and beyond crazy when doling out a punishment to their fourteen-year-old daughter.
After their daughter took a Pop Tart without permission (yes, you read that correctly), James and Crystal Driggers decided the best punishment for her would be to spend a week living in a tent in the woods a quarter-mile from their home.
Oh dear god.
She was given a roll of toilet paper, a flashlight, a whistle and a watch and was instructed to arrive at a fence at designated times to receive her food. In one instance, that food consisted of an open can of Spaghetti-Os and a plastic spoon.
The icing on the cake is that when their area was hit was extreme thunderstorms, her parents didn’t back down. It seems they expected their fourteen-year-old to stay out in her tent for a full week come hell or high water. (I feel like this is an appropriate time to remind you that all the girl did was eat a Pop Tart.)
The girl had served 2 days of her sentence before her own grandmother called the police.
A big thanks to the police who saw fit to arrest the Driggers on charges of child neglect. The girl is currently with the South Caroline Department of Social Services and their four sibling are living with their grandparents for the time being.
Hopefully everyone involved in this case can realize that, while Pop Tarts are seriously delicious, they do not warrant banishing your child to the woods with no food or water for any amount of time as a punishment.
