The Importance of Breakfast

October 2, 2013 by Sara 103 Comments

I’ve written before about the craziness of mornings in our house. It’s not necessarily getting easier. I’m trying to stick to a workout routine but being a single mom, it’s in the morning or there is no exercise to be had. It always feels like a harried rush.

Will and I fly through getting dressed. I organize his backpack and my stuff the night before. I leave our bags, with shoes and other stuff by the back door ready to grab as we run out. I try to be uber-organized on this front so we don’t skip through the most important part of the morning, breakfast.

Not only do I place a huge importance on sitting down with Will in the morning to catch up before our days start, but I know how important a full tummy is for him when he goes into the classroom. We are fortunate that we’re able to swing this.

1 in 7 Canadian children could be starting school on an empty stomach!

Not everyone can. Did you realize that 1 in 7 children in Canada live below the poverty line and could be starting school on an empty stomach? How can these kids be expected to learn when they’re hungry? This is where the Breakfast Club of Canada comes in. This not-for-profit is dedicated to providing school breakfast programs with funding and services so all kids can start their days ready to learn and succeed. Amazing.

Even more amazing? This year NIVEA is partnering with the Breakfast Club of Canada and donating $25,000 to the organization. NIVEA’s donation will contribute towards helping to feed 130,000 Canadian children start on equal footing with those able to have an awesome breakfast before their day starts. Every time you pick up a NIVEA product, you’re helping them to support Breakfast Club of Canada. Cool right?

Breakfast of Champions!

Breakfast of Champions!

I can tell you, I’m feeding 1,000 kids with the amount of NIVEA anti-wrinkle product that I’ve needed since school started!

Do you sit down with your kids for breakfast?

We don’t share breafkfast time together and I have to say – it encourages less communication between family members. You start the morning alone, eating on the run, and the day can easily continue that way.

For us breakfast is one of the only times where we are around the table at the same time. Its a great time to find out what we each have planned for the day (even though most of us are usually half asleep still lol) and to enjoy the most important meal of the day. I have always told the kids a good breakfast will help fuel the rest of your busy day, and is very important.

For us breakfast is fundamental in having a good day with our girls. Our oldest struggles with moods/low blood sugar and if she doesn’t eat a wholesome breakfast, within about 15 minutes of stepping out of bed she’s a bear. It’s also impossible for her to understand why she’s so upset and it will leave her struggling all day. A good breakfast, with good convo and she’s set to go!

It is so important that they go to school with a full belly. That way they can concentrate better and they have the energy to make until lunch to fuel back up. Making the best choices is important to, because it is so easy to send them off on “filler” foods.

breakfast is SO important because it fuels not just her little body, but gives me an opportunity to set a good tone to start her day off with, I try to be cheerful and loving and talk about something we are going to do together later that she can look forward to,
or remind her of something fun happening in school that day.

attitude is everything, and if we start the day off on the right foot, it is likely to continue that way.Important too that I rise even as little as 10 minutes earlier, this makes us less rushed and being less rushed makes it easier to maintain a calm and loving atmosphere. I feel better about myself too when we start the day on a good note, and would much rather sacrifice 10 minutes of sleep to spend those minutes at the table with her.

Our family would be low in energy, low blood sugar & down all day long without breadfast.

It is an important meal in our day because we get to touch base with each other before the busy day begins. And also because eating breakfast gives us energy to make it through the morning

breakfast time is so important for us to ‘regroup’ as a family and to see what’s on everyone’s day will be like.

even tho’ i’m eating milk-less miniwheats out of a bowl i’m still with the girls. we do talk about the day and get them a good start. it’s important to connect as much as possible since they’re away all day. every little bit helps!

you also need a slow cooker and make this….

    1 cup steel cut oats
    3 1/2 cups water
1 cup peeled and chopped apple
    1/2 cup raisins
    2 tablespoons butter
    1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
    2 tablespoons brown sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    Directions
Place the steel cut oats, water, apple, raisins, butter, cinnamon, brown sugar, and vanilla extract into a slow cooker, and stir to combine and dissolve the sugar. Cover the cooker, set to Low, and allow to cook 6 to 7 hours (for firm oats) or 8 hours (for softer texture). I use maple syrup to drizzle on as well!

Breakfast is important to our family because it gets the day off to a good start. Who wants to start the day hungry – the body and mind just don’t function well. Kudos to Breakfast Clubs of Canada!

Breakfast is important to our family because as parents we want to make sure the kids have enough to eat to provide them enough energy to get them through the school day. It’s also a great way to start off the morning together and chat what we will be doing for the day.

With a child that never wants to get out of bed, time is never on our side, however there is always time for a healthy breakfast, not always sitting down together, but with time to chat about the upcoming day. Happy times!:-)

Sadly, there’s really isn’t time for us to sit down together in the morning, unless we woke up 30 minutes earlier, which I will never do… but yeah, the morning is still a mad-dash – they eat while I get the lunches and bags together. But they eat a good breakfast – can’t skip the most important meal of the day!!

    (Oy, that boy’s face…)
