Uzo Aduba plays Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on one of our favourite shows here in the UrbanMoms office, Orange Is The New Black. And while we are counting down the days until June 12th when season 3 drops, all eyes are on Uzo for another reason.
Like many of us, Uzo’s life has been touched by cancer—she lost an aunt to leukemia, a cousin to breast cancer and another aunt is currently fighting breast cancer. In October, she also lost a woman who she has referred to as her “second mom” to cancer.
But instead of laying down and letting the disease win, Uzo wants to make something better come from all this suffering. “What I also want to carry with me is all of these people were such lights—bright, bright lights that were dimmed far too early,” Uzo told Women’s Health Magazine. “I want to remember that joy, that passion for life, that strength, that positivity that they all had … and just turn it into [something good].”
So Uzo is lacing up her running shoes and partnering with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to run the Boston Marathon today in honour of the friends and family she has lost. She hopes to help fund more research and, of course, “kick cancer’s ass”.
Take a look at the video below to see why Uzo runs below. And good luck to Uzo and all the other marathoners today!
