First things first. Katie Holmes said today that there is pretty much zero possibility of a Dawson’s Creek reunion. So let’s take a moment to mourn the loss to our collective media conscious. RIP Dawson, Joey, Pacey and Jenn.
Okay so now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, Katie Holmes is on the cover of this month’s Ocean Drive. Talking about everything from living to NYC to her life as an actress, Holmes opens up and shares the post-Tom Cruise Katie we’ve all grown to know and love.
We can’t get enough of this down-to-earth actress, mother, artist and part time dancer. She showed up at the interview with a severely cracked iPhone (“I think most people have cracked iPhones.”) and a deep respect for Beyoncé (“I think she’s not just incredibly talented, but she works so hard.”). She sounds a bit like our twin…Holmes kind-of, sort-of indirectly made mention of her past marriage (or at least that’s how we’re reading it) and how she has no plans to look back.“I don’t really regret anything that I’ve done. I’ve learned from everything, and everything sort of leads you to the next place. I just keep going.”
We get it, it’s hard to regret something that led to someone so important in your life. Of course we’re referring to her beautiful nine-year-old daughter Suri. Holmes jokes that what every parent has learned could probably result in more than a few books.
“[Motherhood] changes you completely in such amazing ways, and I think that you become who you were meant to be. Being a parent also is a source of inspiration to just work really hard. You want to set an example—and, you know, [your kids] are what drives you.”
She tries to be a role model for her daughter much like her parents were for her. We were raised [with the attitude], Whatever you want to do, you can do it, no problem, just do it.”
And it’s not just her parents who inspire her to be a good role model for Suri. Her work ethic and willingness to take risks in her career make her a force to be reckoned with.“I don’t shy away from risks. I’m just interested in a lot of different things. I don’t even think of it as a risk; I think of it as something exciting and new… As I’ve grown up, I think that the harder you work the more successful you are. From what I have seen, the people at the top, they’re just constantly working and constantly surrounding themselves with other successful, like-minded creative people.”
With her crazy schedule though, Holmes makes sure she prioritizes being a mom above all else. For example, she was one of the hosts of the 2015 Global Citizen Festival and you better believe Suri was in tow.
And while all the fashion shoots, galas, movies and television shows may seem over-the-top glamourous to you and I, Holmes still tried to lead as normal a life as possible. “I have a very normal life, and I happen to work in an industry that is abnormal. Daily life, I take a train and cab; it’s just about getting from here to there, and I don’t care how I do it. I have to get there.”
