Dining Al Fresco and Talking

DSCN0863.JPG

Today she said, “Hey mummy, do you think we can eat on the balcony outside? It’s such a beautiful day, you know. Is that unusual?”

She drops new words in and out of her sentences these days, not always sure they fit.
Me: What do you mean?
She: Hmm?
Me: What do you mean by, is that unusual. Is what unusual?
She: I mean, is it unusual if we sit outside?
Me: Well, we haven’t sat out here together in a long time. I suppose that makes it a bit unusual. As in not the usual thing we do. But, now that the weather is better, we can eat out here more often, if you like.
She: *nods and widens eyes* Then it will be the usual thing.
Me: *smiling* Yes.
She: Hey mummy? Can we bring the iPad outside so we can hear that doorbell song? I heard in in Jed’s car, and I just love that song.
Me: Yeah, me too.
She: Is that Jack Black?
Me: *makes a face* No, it’s Jack White
She: *makes a face back* Are you sure?

I love it when she makes this suspicious face at me… she does it all the time lately.
Me: I assure you, this is Jack White. Jack Black is… the other guy.
She: Oh yeah, from Kung Fu Panda… *snaps fingers and eats ham sandwich*
I smile, relieved that she knows the difference. (I mean, really.)
And we talk about how much time it takes to make a cake, and about where the best places to find snails are, and why mixing all the colours only makes brown when really it should be more like a rainbow. I had to agree with that last part.
And then she asked for that good dancing song by the Ting Tings. I obliged her, and she danced…

And we drank apple juice, and we sang, and we talked, we danced, and we laughed and we laughed. She told me it was the bestest sandwich she ever tasted. What a little love.
And during it all…

…she cleared her entire plate!
We really should make this a usual thing.
Do you have a usual thing with your small person?
